The InterContinental Vienna, one of the city’s most traditional hotels, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Since its opening in 1964, the Hotel am Wiener Stadtpark has stood as a symbol of internationality, modernity and hospitality.
This special anniversary was celebrated with a glamorous 1960s-style celebration on Friday evening. Over 600 invited guests from politics, culture, business and the media came together to honor the rich history of the house.
An institution with an international flair
The InterContinental Vienna, once opened as the largest hotel in Austria, has set new standards right from the start. It was the first hotel of an international chain in Vienna and quickly became a magnet for stars from film, music and fashion. Personalities such as Omar Sharif, Mel Ferrer, Grace Kelly, Kylie Minogue, Harry Belafonte, Sir Peter Ustinov, Falco, Margaret Thatcher and the Rolling Stones were among the house’s prominent guests. Many artists and cultural workers, architects and business people came to the anniversary celebration such as Gery Keszler, Elisabeth Gürtler, Vienna Tourism Director Norbert Kettner, Burgtheater director Stefan Bachmann and his wife, the actress Melanie Kretschmann, MQ director Bettina Leidl, Impulstanz director Karl Regensburger, Aernout De Jong (InterContinental Hotels Group – Director Operations Northern Europe), Rabenhof director Thomas Gratzer, the artists Deborah Sengl and Peter Sengl, the BEHF architects Susi Hasenauer, Stephan Ferenczy and Armin Ebner, Erich Bernard (BWM Architekten), the Swiss architect Max Dudler, Renate Androsch-Holzer (President of the Austrian Convention Bureau), Ottakringer supervisory board member Christiane Wenckheim, the real estate entrepreneurs Eugen Otto and Daniel Jelitzka as well as figure skating legend Ingrid Wendl and musician Dennis Jale – to name just a few.
Homage to history and the future
Ernst Woller, First President of the Vienna State Parliament representing Mayor Michael Ludwig, emphasized in his speech the importance of the InterContinental Vienna as a supporting pillar for Vienna as a tourism and congress city, as well as the importance of the traditional house for the capital’s business location. Michael Tojner, owner of the hotel, emphasized the continued appeal of the hotel: “The InterContinental has always stood for internationality and Viennese charm. At the same time, our InterConti stands for first-class service, perfectly organized events and the best, most timeless bar in Vienna.” Erich Hohenberger, district leader of the third district, promised, “to do everything possible so that the revitalization of the area can begin as soon as possible.” Brigitte Trattner, General Director of the InterContinental Vienna, also looked back proudly on the past 60 years and looked to the future with confidence “The InterContinental Vienna is a haven of hospitality, a tireless trendsetter and a true Viennese institution that has made history and will continue to set the standards for excellence in the future.”
An evening dedicated to music and cuisine
The anniversary celebration was accompanied by top-class musical performances: DJ Lucy McEvil was on the turntables, pop wonder Ankathi Koi carried the guests away with her performance and Romantic Slivo’s show made the birthday crowd really rejoice. The evening was capped off with a DJ set from Martin Markeli, which accompanied the celebrations until the early hours of the morning.
A visionary place of hospitality
A milestone in modern architecture, the InterContinental Vienna was built according to designs by the renowned architectural firm Holabird & Root and combines international chic with Viennese charm. Today, under the management of Brigitte Trattner, the hotel continues to be a pioneer in the industry, providing innovative impulses. With its top-class events and the unique mix of tradition and modernity, the InterContinental Vienna will continue to play a defining role in the Viennese hotel industry in the future. Over the years, the traditional hotel has built an exceptional relationship between the dedicated team and its loyal guests that goes far beyond mere service. This special bond became noticeable at the 60th anniversary, when around 50 long-time regular guests came especially to celebrate. The InterContinental Vienna has long been more than just a place to stay – it is a place where a real community has developed where guests feel at home.
