The year-round hunting of the golden jackal, which is permitted in Tyrol by the Geisler Ordinance, not only contradicts EU law, but also clearly contradicts the Tyrolean hunting law.
The fact that the Tyrolean state government is sticking to this regulation despite it being unconstitutional is a constitutional scandal. We therefore reported State Councilor Geisler for abuse of office. The federal states’ hunting injustice against a species that contributes to increasing biodiversity reflects the competitive thinking of hunters who are obviously out of date for ‘YOUR’ game.

Vienna (OTS) – The golden jackal is illegally hunted in several federal states in Austria. Illegal because the species is protected under EU law and there is also a lack of data on population sizes. The situation is particularly bad in Tyrol, where the golden jackal has been banned from being shot all year round by regulation. To achieve this, the state government is even prepared to break the constitution, as it openly admits. The VGT has therefore filed a complaint for abuse of office against the state councilor Josef Geisler, who is responsible for the relevant regulation. Firstly, after being informed by the VGT, he knowingly issued a shooting regulation that contradicts the Tyrolean Hunting Act, and secondly, he did not allow an assessment period for the regulation and did not inform recognized environmental organizations upon request, even though this is stipulated by the Aarhus Convention, which Austria ratified in 2005 .
Proponent of the referendum For a federal hunting law, DDr. Martin Balluch, says: “The fact that the Tyrolean state government is sticking to this regulation despite it being unconstitutional is a constitutional scandal. For an animal welfare-friendly, ecological hunting reform and a progressive federal law The referendum for a federal hunting law collects declarations of support that can be submitted by all people eligible to vote in Austria in any district or municipal office as well as online around the clock via ID Austria.
On the occasion of World Jackal Day VGT activists will protest on Friday, April 19th, from 10 a.m. at the Anna column at Maria-Theresien-Straße 18 in 6020 Innsbruck against the unconstitutional and EU law-contradictory regulations. Press photos from the rally will be available online from 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 19th.
