Fire out – operation soon over
Vienna (OTS) – A basement fire broke out in a high-rise building at Engerthstrasse 249-253 this morning. The fire has now been extinguished and the operation is expected to be over in the early evening hours.
During the operation, the kindergarten in the building was immediately evacuated and the children were taken to the inner courtyard. The immediate measures group supported the evacuation and care of people and children.
Due to the heavy smoke and continued intensity of the fire, the alarm level was increased from two to three during the morning. The children were taken to another kindergarten by the fire department and apartments on a staircase were cleared. After the fire, the residents were escorted back to their apartments, whereby each apartment was checked for harmless carbon monoxide levels.
There were six injured people who were already treated on site.
The basement of the building sustained significant damage and the fire department is continuing to carry out clean-up work.
The replacement accommodation provided by the Emergency Measures Group is unlikely to be needed.
