Intelligent systems are being used in the construction of China’s deepest underwater tunnel

Shenzhen, China (ots/PRNewswire) China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG) is using eight intelligent systems to build the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway, the project for China’s deepest underwater tunnel with the highest water pressure.

During the World Tunnel Congress 2024 (WTC2024), which took place in Shenzhen from April 19 to 25, engineers, experts and scientists from all over the world visited the CRTG tunnel construction site in the Pearl River Delta. There they got a first-hand look at the eight intelligent systems used in the Shenzhen-Jiangmen railway project – a key stage in China’s intelligent tunneling.

The eight systems include intelligent tunneling, segment assembly, coordination, diagnosis, monitoring, component production, material management and ventilation. By using these intelligent systems, CRTG successfully overcame the challenges of the project and ensured efficient operations.

The Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway is located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and connects the southeastern Chinese coastal cities of Shenzhen and Jiangmen. The project includes a 9,175 meter long main tunnel and a 1,160 meter long inclined shaft, which presents significant geological challenges to the construction.

The eight systems have improved the efficiency and safety of tunnel construction. They are supported by an intelligent management platform for real-time monitoring, analysis, collaborative management, auxiliary tunneling and big data analysis.

The intelligent tunneling system, a key component of tunnel construction, uses advanced technologies such as neural networks, machine learning, predictive algorithms, edge control and emergency backup control. These innovations enable the proactive prediction of parameters for complex geological conditions, the adjustment of the shield tunneling attitude and the implementation of manned and unmanned intelligent tunnel operations, including early warning systems for incidents.

“We are continuously working on research and development in the field of intelligent tunneling to close the data barrier between construction and operation and to establish new standards in this area,” explains Hong Kairong, chief engineer at CRTG.

At WTC2024, ITA also celebrated its 50th anniversary and presented 50 significant global projects. China was awarded for 9 projects, in which CRTG participated in 7, including Chengkun Railway Shambala Tunnel, Dayaoshan Tunnel, Xi’an-Kangding Railway Qilian Tunnel, Qinghai-Tibet Railway Xin Guanjia Tunnel, Second Jiaozhou Bay -Underwater Tunnels, the Shenzhen Metro Line 14 and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor. This success underlines CRTG’s outstanding achievements in global tunnel construction and its strong positioning in the industry.

The WTC is the most influential industry event, attracting a global audience of engineers and professionals.
