The ÖVP is shy. Although it acts as if it wants to abolish the fully slatted floor for pigs, it does not agree to any legal changes that, on the one hand, would provide for straw instead of concrete and, on the other hand, would be implemented in reality well before 2040, as the Constitutional Court demands. According to the regulation on pig farming, every pig in Austria must now be provided with a – literally – “physically comfortable lying area”. This campaign is intended to clarify whether the fully slatted floor without litter is such a thing and how much pigs suffer on fully slatted floors if the ÖVP has its way.
