This initiative marks one groundbreaking milestone in gentle winter tourism. The first winter hiking trails in Austria have been certified since January.

Uniform quality standards for undisturbed winter hiking enjoyment

Certification criteria for winter hiking trails were developed over a period of two years to ensure consistent quality standards and enable hiking regardless of snow conditions. Certified winter hiking trails are clear and marked throughout, well prepared and require neither special equipment still alpine knowledge. The paths enable a unique, undisturbed nature experience and become checked regularly and maintained to ensure the safety of hikers.

Winter sports are changing: hiking all year round

Winter hiking is the perfect winter activity to experience uncomplicated moments in nature. “Hiking is possible all year round and is accessible to a much wider audience compared to other winter activities such as ski touring or snowshoeing“, explains Ulrich Andres, Managing Director of Austria’s Hiking Villages. “The needs of winter vacationers have changed in recent years – winter activities are no longer limited exclusively to ski slopes. With winter hiking we want to offer sustainable solutions to current and future challenges in winter tourism.
