Infineon receives certification of the Science Based Target Initiative for ambitious decarbonization goals

-Scope 1 and Scope 2 goals meet the highest SBTI standard for short-term CO2 reduction targets

Infineon is ambitious Scope 3-goal to further reduce emissions along the supply chain

Active cooperation with over 100 suppliers to further reduce emissions

Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: ifnny) has reached another milestone on the way to decarbonization. The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTI) has confirmed the company’s ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The validation includes both the company’s own emissions (SCOPE 1 and 2) and emissions along the supply chain (SCOPE 3). The goals for SCOPE 1 and 2 stand in accordance with the Paris climate agreement to limit the global increase in temperature to 1.5 ° Celsius and thus meet the most ambitious SBTI category for short-term CO2 reduction targets. In addition, Infineon has now also set an official Scope 3 goal for the supply chain. Cooperation with suppliers is a fundamental part of Infineon’s sustainability strategy. Infineon’s procurement team is already actively cooperating with more than 100 suppliers with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions along the supply chain.

“The confirmation of our decarbonization goals by the Science Based Target Initiative marks an important milestone in our pursuit of sustainability. It underlines our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions along our entire value chain,” says Elke Reichart, member of the board and chief digital and sustainability officer at Infineon. “Climate change and its consequences remain one of the greatest threats to society and require our ongoing action. The determination of a SCOPE 3 goal underlines our self-obligation to further promote decarbonization.”

Specifically, Infineon has committed to SBTI to reduce the absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 72.5 percent by 2030 compared to the base year 2019. The goals for SCOPE 1 and 2 relate to the company’s direct activities. In addition, Infineon has now started a scope 3 emission goal, which says that 72.5 percent of its suppliers, measured by the emissions of the purchased goods and services, the investment goods and the outstanding transport and sales, will have a science-based goal by 2029.

In addition to the certified science-based goals, Infineon adheres to its goal of CO2 neutrality for SCOPE 1 and 2 to 2030, which the company has formulated. The reduction in CO2 emissions is still a priority. The voluntary reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency measures and green electricity are important levers for the company to reduce ecological footprint.

The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTI) is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTI specifies companies a clearly defined path of how they can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Goals are considered “science -based” if you match the latest knowledge of climate science in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement – limitation of global warming to well below 2 ° Celsius, ideally at 1.5 ° C above the pre -industrial level.
