The development of budgetary energy prices continued to be inconsistent in June 2025: While electricity and gas became cheaper compared to May, fossil fuels such as heating oil and fuels were clear. The main cause of this price increase was risk premiums as a result of the military conflict in the Middle East in early June. Overall, this results in an increase in the energy price index by 0.8 % compared to the previous month.
A different picture arises in the year: heating oil and fuels are still cheaper than in June 2024. However, the increase in electricity prices is strongly important, which can be explained primarily by the loss of state relief measures and increased network charges. Overall, the energy price index in June 2025 was 3.5 % above the previous year’s value and thus contributes to general inflation.
“The global energy markets have calmed down significantly since the highlight of the energy crisis in 2022, but remain vulnerable to external shocks,” explains Lukas Zwieb, an expert in the Austrian energy agency. “Persistent geopolitical uncertainties and weather extremes continue to lead to volatile prices. Conflicts like that in June can cause noticeable price jumps,” said Zwieb.
