Incident with Twin City Liner on the Danube Canal near Ostbahnbrücke | City of Vienna
Vienna (OTS) –

On Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 8:42 a.m. there was an incident with the Twin City Liner in the Danube Canal. Shortly after departing from the City shipping station at Schwedenplatz, the Twin City Liner was traveling on the Danube Canal when the two captains had to avoid an obstacle with their ship that came from the Ostbahn Bridge. This bridge is currently being renovated and construction work was taking place on the bridge at the time of the accident.

No one was injured, but the Twin City Liner was significantly damaged during the evasive maneuver, meaning that it was not possible to continue the journey. The passengers were immediately provided with buses from the Blaguss company for transport back to Schwedenplatz.

The shipping inspectorate was immediately on site and documented the accident including witness statements.

The Twin City Liner has damage to one hull. The ship is currently in the port of Vienna and will be taken to the Österreichische Schiffswerften AG in Linz for repairs and checks as quickly as possible. It is currently not possible to estimate when operations with the Twin City Liner will be able to resume.

“Our guests who are affected by the cancellation of the Vienna-Bratislava ship connection have already been informed and will of course have their fare refunded immediately. We apologize for the inconvenience and I would like to take this opportunity to expressly thank the two captains on duty who – as far as we know so far – reacted extremely carefully,” says Dr. Gerd Krämer, managing director of the operating company of the Twin City Liner.
