The documentation “The Taylor Swift effect: pop icon and political hopeful” (ZDF/ARTE, Signed Media Production, 52 min., 2024) by Aaron Thiesen looks for the reasons for Taylor Swift’s rise to become the most successful musician of the moment. The film contains previously unpublished material from a private archive that shows Taylor Swift performing as an eleven-year-old and can now be seen on TV for the first time. The documentary will be shown on TV for the first time on Friday, November 1, 2024 at 9:45 p.m. on ARTE. The documentary will be available online first from October 25, 2024 arte.tv to stream.
A woman of superlatives: four-time Grammy winner, highest-earning musician in the world, most number one albums by a female musician in the USA. Pretty much every record that can be set in the music business is associated with the name Taylor Swift. The focus of the documentary is her special songwriting talent, her business acumen, her courageous decisions for her artistic freedom, but also her very special, intimate fan relationship. Today, more than half of Americans identify as Taylor Swift fans, forming one of the most loyal and passionate fan bases in the world. This is also of considerable relevance for the upcoming US election.
In search of Swift’s formula for success, Aaron Thiesen’s documentary also goes to the origins of her career in Pennsylvania and Nashville, Tennessee. The film provides insights into Swift’s childhood and youth, and shows her early musical successes, including one of her first performances in front of a large audience. The concert recording, in which eleven-year-old Taylor Swift can be seen on stage with country singer Pat Garrett, will be shown on television for the first time.
The documentation is part of the ARTE program focus USA 2024.
