Immune against addiction – is that possible?

Immune against addiction – is that possible?

We all have the prerequisite for the development of a dependency in us. But why does one person develop an addiction, but not the other?
Mag. Denise Mühlbacher, MSC, head of the Salzburg Clinic, speaks in her lecture on March 19, 2025 at 6 p.m. about which factors favor the development of addictions and which can save us from it.
The lecture takes place as part of the “Psychotherapy” in conversation at the Austrian Society of the Golden Cross, 1010 Vienna.

Addiction is an illness that has many faces. The forms range from so-called fabric-bound dependencies such as alcohol, tobacco, medication or illegal drugs to behavioral addictions such as play, internet, work or buying addiction.
The most common addiction in Austria is smoking – despite declining numbers, everyone smokes: r fifth a day – followed by alcohol.(1) Estimated 340,000 people in Austria are currently alcohol -dependent(2).

Most dependencies have massive negative effects on the sick themselves, but also on their surrounding area as well as society as a whole.

Especially in the case of legal substances such as alcohol or also with behavioral addictions, the ridge between a reasonable extent and a problematic handling can be narrow. The loss of control and the associated formation of addiction have been a highly complex thing that includes personal, biological and social components. We all have the prerequisite for this. Nevertheless, there are always surprising, sometimes even “unfair” examples in which one person develops an addiction, but the other does not.

What protective factors are there in terms of dependency development? Which measures, behaviors and environmental conditions can search for us from diagnosis and preserve the associated suffering?

Mag. Denise Mühlbacher clarifies these questions in her lecture for the Austrian society from the golden cross:
