For the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Multiethnische Diaspora Association Idëmo! Together with the Srebrenica Memorial Center and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (Birn) for a film evening with discussion in the film casino.

The association founded in 2024 was an honor and a concern to tell the story of Srebrenica in Vienna together with both partners. “It is aware that the mood for the topic is very charged this year. But it is important to us that our generation finds a language for and dealing with the topic on the Western Balkans and in the diaspora. It is important to talk about talking about Bosniac women, Croatians, Serb women and others all over the world as in Srebrenica, ”says Idëmo! Co-coaster Teresa Reiter.

“The films are a bridge between the past and the present and a memorial for the fact that the responsibility to maintain the truth about the genocide is universal, i.e. to all of us. The event is part of the international efforts to preserve the memory of the victims of the genocide and to tell personal stories that say more as historical representations or political analysis,” comments the Srebrenica Memorial Center. Especially because of the many people with roots from Bosnia and Herzegovina, who live in Vienna today, be it a special event.

Two films tell of the people behind the term “srebrenica genocide”

On June 30, 2025, the film casino in Vienna shows two films in the presence of the deputy Memorial Center Director, Amra Begić, and Birn journalist Lamija Grebo. Then Idëmo invites! To a short public discussion with the two guests.

Especially the first film, Samir Mehic Bowie – Briefe Aus Srebrenicadeals with a topic that may be surprising for many, namely the history of the Bosnian rock musician Samir Mehić, who was called after his idol “Bowie”. Mehić was murdered in 1995. In a documentary that has never been shown in Austria, companions remember the musician.

This is followed by the documentation The Lives Behind the Fields of Deathwho tells the story of D̵ulsa Velić. In 1995, like tens of thousands of other women, children and old people from Srebrenica, she was sitting in the buses that drove from the UN Compound in Potočari near Srebrenica to Kladanj. Most of them never saw their male relatives again.

Both films were produced by pear and are shown in the original language Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian with English -language subtitles. Tickets for the film evening on June 30, 2025 are available at the ticket counter or on the film casino website for 8 euros per card.
