“I look forward to paying income tax soon”

She inherited a double-digit million amount in 2022 – and is having it distributed. Marlene Engelhorn calls for structures that regulate the power of money and taxes on wealth. “Wealth and inequality are structural and man-made. And taxes are the ultimate democratic measure against inequality.”she says 32-year-old German-Austrian in an interview with the Health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”.

In 2022 she inherited millions – and decided to give most of it back to society. “The 25 million were in an escrow account that I didn’t have access to Citizens’ Council has discussed which initiatives will receive how much money, and trustees are responsible for the disbursements. That will last until 2029.” Why did she act so unusually? “I would rather be one of those who pay taxes and keep the business running. Solutions to questions of justice are on a silver platter: You don’t have to think the taxes on wealth and inheritance are great if you pay them.”

She can’t find money “horny”? “I don’t know what it means to ask yourself whether you have enough money for rent or for food. Conversely, that means that money doesn’t have the same appeal as it does for people who have to make ends meet with their income.”

The impetus for her new perspective was an incident with a friend: “He had a question about a rental agreement. I didn’t understand and said, ‘Ask the family lawyer!’ and was amazed that he didn’t know what that was.”

It took many such experiences before she asked herself: How do I relate to my wealth? “That’s when things got interesting.” Your legacy is included “acceleration moment” been. “I don’t have to live in a five-room condominium, and it’s unimaginable for me to get on a plane regularly in Europe. I’m looking forward to paying income tax soon.”
