The city of Vienna’s project is free for schools and celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. For the school year 2024/2025, 1,000 training sessions from Viennese schools have already been booked.
Quick first aid with a cardiovascular arrest can save lives in an emergency. First aiders are often afraid of doing something wrong and starting far too rarely before the emergency services arrive. The project “I can save life” in schools already sensitizes children for the topic. You can also provide life-saving help if you learn to make an emergency call early, to use a defibrillator and know the right behavior in the event of a cardiovascular arrest.
Children are interested, motivated and have fun practicing resuscitation. The right behavior in emergency situations is automated by training and increases the proportion of trained adults.

10 years of resuscitation training at Viennese schools
In the 2014/2015 school year, the project took on a pioneering role: for the first time, a federal state -wide resuscitation training was carried out at schools. Since then, around 125,000 students in Vienna have been trained with a curriculum of the MedUni Vienna according to current scientific knowledge.
The project started ten years ago in the 3rd school level. After a panda -related break, it continued in the school year 2022/2023 and extended to the 6th school level. Repetition in the 6th school level consolidates the knowledge, automated correct behavior and promotes self -confident help in emergency situations. An important step to further increase the survival rate for a cardiovascular arrest.
2023 received the project “I can save life!” The KSÖ security award for the second time. The helpers of Vienna coordinate the project, which bundles a lot of know-how and resources through the participation of the Vienna Education Directorate Vienna, the MedUni Vienna and the professionals of the worker Samaritan Association, the Vienna Youth Red Cross, the Malteser and the Johanniter. The training has been financed by the city of Vienna since the beginning and are now also secured for the next four school years.

The helpers of Vienna advise and train together with their operational and partner organizations about the correct behavior in emergencies. They give tips that make your own life, but also society safer. As a prevention facility of the city of Vienna, the goal is to prepare the Viennese for the best possible way for emergencies. The offer for kindergarten children up to senior citizens ranges from personal advice, free lectures, information events to coordination of the platform “Voluntarily for Vienna”. The largest security show in Austria, the Vienna Security Festival around the national holiday on Vienna Rathausplatz, is also one of the offers of the helpers of Vienna.
