Yang Chaobin, Huawei board member and president of ICT products and solutions, delivered a keynote speech at the Global MBB Forum 2024 today, saying: “The coming era of mobile AI will create tremendous opportunities for the mobile industry and the coming decade have a profound impact. Further development of 5.5G technology will be key to unlocking the potential of mobile AI. Huawei looks forward to working with all industry partners to advance 5.5G and solidify the foundation for the era of mobile AI. Together we can help society and industry become smarter.”
According to Yang, thanks to rapidly evolving 5.5G and AI technologies, two trends have emerged that will reshape the industry and usher in a “mobile AI era.” The first trend, which he calls “mobile going AI.” in which mobile Internet services are being transformed by new service and business models. The second trend is “AI going mobile,” where new mobile services such as intelligent vehicles and robots are unlocking enormous business opportunities. These developments, he believes, create new impulses and opportunities for society and the mobile communications industry.
According to Huawei, these trends will impact the ICT industry in three ways. First, AI agents for individuals will redesign mobile Internet services so that everyone has a personal intelligent assistant, which means that AI agent networks must support real-time services. Second, smart driving will transform mobility by making vehicles flexible and intelligent spaces, meaning smart vehicle networks will need to deliver high uplink speeds. Third, generalized embodied intelligence will emerge in various scenarios, unlocking new productivity and a 10 billion AI robot market, meaning future robot networks will require comprehensively higher capabilities.
Yang explained that 5.5G networks can support the diverse connections, experiences and services needed to meet these new demands posed by AI agents, intelligent vehicles and embodied intelligence as the networks enable innovation and development in advance five key areas:
First, 5.5G can meet different needs by providing high-bandwidth networks. As users increasingly demand diverse experiences, sub-100 GHz bands can be integrated as needed to flexibly deliver the network capabilities required for superior multi-factor experiences. “0-bit, 0-watt” technology can also be used to enable superior energy efficiency.
Second, 5.5G can be used to optimize the total cost of ownership of devices as it enables a single network to integrate IoT connections for all scenarios. RedCap and passive IoT technologies reduce the cost of IoT, and 5.5G is needed to maximize the number of simultaneous connections supported. Improved network capacity is also required to enable devices and establish IoT connections everywhere.
Third, 5.5G can provide unified portals that support differentiated experience assurance and monetization – something carriers need to meet increasingly diverse service needs. 5.5G core networks have the ability to deliver the user, service and network capabilities required for differentiated, experience-based monetization.
Fourth, 5.5G can provide a unified service portal that makes mobile AI more affordable and supports diverse intelligent services. Network operators need the native AI service portal that 5.5G core networks provide to share network functions with third parties. This will make smart services available on more affordable mobile devices.
Fifth, 5.5G can leverage the Telecom Foundation Model to enable a high degree of network autonomy and realize the concept of “0 touch, 0 wait, 0 fault”. The Telecom Foundation Model provides the capability of highly autonomous networks with comprehensive intelligence by it provides two types of applications – co-pilots and agents – and three types of digital experts. This will be a new trend in network operations.
The 15th Global Mobile Broadband Forum, themed “5.5G Leads Mobile AI Era,” will be held October 30-31 in Istanbul, Turkey. The event is hosted by Huawei with the support of our industry partners GSMA and GTI. Together with operators, industry leaders and ecosystem partners, we will showcase the latest advances in the industry and explore new opportunities. Industry representatives will discuss how to succeed in the era of mobile AI with 5.5G and how to leverage the success of 5G to achieve even greater success with 5.5G.
