Huawei’s Li Peng: Unlocking new growth in 5G and new 5.5G commercialization

Barcelona, Spain (ots/PRNewswire) Huawei today hosted the 5G Beyond Growth Summit at MWC Barcelona 2024. At the summit, Li Peng, Huawei’s Corporate Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Service, discussed how network operators can achieve business success with 5G and how 5.5G unlocks the potential of Networks will further develop and create new growth opportunities.

“5G is on the right path to economic success,” Li said. The commercialization of 5G began in 2019, and in the past five years it has already acquired 1.5 billion 5G users around the world. It took nine years until 4G achieved this. Currently, 20% of global mobile subscribers are using 5G. These users generate 30% of all mobile traffic and contribute to 40% of mobile service revenue.

Li said, “5.5G will enter commercial deployment in 2024, and as 5.5G, AI and cloud converge, network operators can unlock the potential of new applications and features.”

To capitalize on these opportunities, operators around the world should focus on high-quality connectivity, multi-dimensional monetization, new services and generative AI.

High-quality networks are still the basis for business success

It has been shown that mobile users are willing to purchase experience upgrades for their mobile packages if the quality of their networks is high enough. The traffic generated by these users is therefore expected to increase significantly, allowing operators to maximize the value of the traffic. This has led to more and more operators proposing strategic goals that include building high-quality 5G networks.

For example, some operators in the Middle East have already deployed Massive MIMO networks, and the optimal experience these networks provide has made the rollout of 5G FWA a success. Currently, 5G FWA has connected nearly 3 million households, making it a strong driver of carrier revenue growth.

Multidimensional monetization maximizes the value of every bit

More than 20% of global 5G operators have already introduced speed-tiered pricing models. For example, a Thai provider recently released a 5G Boost Mode add-on module that allows subscribers to select different speed levels to best meet their usage needs. With this model, the provider was able to increase its ARPU by around 23%. Another Chinese provider has launched a guaranteed uplink package to give livestreamers a smooth, high-resolution livestreaming experience. The package is extremely popular and has helped the provider increase its ARPU by more than 70%.

Newly emerging services enable long-term, sustainable growth

New services such as new calling, cloud phones and glasses-free 3D are gaining more and more attention among consumers. For example, New Calling’s added value functions such as virtual avatars are very popular. Users are also willing to pay more for services that offer a real-time experience, such as: B. applying for vehicle insurance from a single source.

5G has also been adopted by many industries. In China, more than 50,000 private 5G networks are already in commercial use in over 50 industries. The new capabilities of 5.5G, including deterministic latency, precise positioning and passive IoT, are expected to create even more opportunities for operators in the B2B market.

Generative AI will lead the mobile industry into the age of total intelligence

According to IDC, 170 million AI mobile phones will be shipped worldwide in 2024. This will account for 15% of all smartphone shipments. The next generation of AI phones will have more powerful storage, display and imaging capabilities. The AIGC applications supported by these phones will generate hundreds of billions of GB of data and create new opportunities for carriers.

Li concluded his remarks at the summit by promising, “Together with network operators, we will unlock the potential of 5G and 5.5G and drive incredible new growth.”
