Huawei and Vodacom Tanzania launch DigiTruck program to promote an inclusive and sustainable digital Tanzania

Huawei and Vodacom Tanzania have joined forces to launch the DigiTruck initiative, which aims to provide digital literacy and skills to the people of Tanzania.

The initiative complements the Tanzanian government’s vision to promote innovation, inclusion and sustainable development through the use of digital technologies.

The official launch was conducted by Doto Mashaka Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania. Also present were Jerry William Silaa, Minister of Information Communications and Information Technology; Chen Mingjian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Tanzania, and other high-ranking guests from the public and private sectors.

“I am honored to represent the President of the United Republic of Tanzania at this historic event. I congratulate Huawei and Vodacom on this profound initiative, which will greatly complement the government’s digitalization efforts. The data clearly shows that we still have a lot of work to do as a nation to bridge the digital divide and improve digital literacy. It is clear that both the government and private sector players need to work together to address this challenge. Our country is big, so I invite Huawei and its partners to consider more DigiTrucks to reach more people and advance the digital revolution in Tanzania,” said Doto Mashaka Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Tanzania.

Information Communications and Information Technology Minister Jerry William Silaa reiterated the urgent need for digital and financial literacy in Tanzania so that the country can keep up with the ongoing digital revolution.

“The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania places great emphasis on the use of information and communications technology (ICT), including digital skills, as the foundation for the country’s development. We believe that the future of Tanzania lies in the hands of our youth and equipping them with the necessary digital skills is our top priority. In line with this, the government has initiated various programs including policies such as the 5-year Digital Economy Strategy 2024, which aims to improve digital skills across the country. The launch of this DigiTruck project funded by Huawei and Vodacom will help strengthen our national digital capabilities and enable Tanzania to rise in the world rankings,” said William Silaa.

The DigiTruck Program for Tanzania aims to expand digital skills training to Tanzania’s remote regions, particularly youth and women. The initiative is part of Huawei’s commitment to digital inclusion TECH4ALL– Program aimed at improving equity and quality of education to support Tanzania’s remote communities and underserved populations.

“Huawei and Vodacom’s DigiTruck project is not only a key initiative to continuously deepen friendship and trust between the peoples of the two countries, but also a practical collaboration to promote digital inclusion and sustainable development cooperation in the field of digital technologies, in order to “To realize the vision of Tanzania’s digital transformation,” said Chen Mingjian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Tanzania.

The DigiTruck will travel across Tanzania, covering ten regions in the first year. It will use innovative ICT solutions to give more people, especially students in remote areas, access to quality education. By the end of the second year, the entire country is expected to be covered so that thousands of Tanzanians can reap the benefits of digital education. The managing directors of Vodacom Tanzania and Huawei promised to work together to make the project a real success story in Tanzania.

This launch follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two companies on February 15, 2024, paving the way for collaboration in the areas of corporate social responsibility (CSR), commitment to accelerating start-ups and digital skills.

In addition to Tanzania, Huawei has implemented DigiTruck initiatives in 18 other countries, benefiting more than 93,000 people around the world.
