Hot summer: Thermal activation of concrete contributes to sustainable building cooling

Vienna (OTS) Thermal component activation, in combination with renewable energy, ensures a pleasant room temperature in winter, but also in the increasingly hot summers. Due to the advantage of being able to cool, it is becoming increasingly popular in the Austrian construction industry. An innovation map shows construction projects that have already been implemented in Austria.

A significant part of the total energy consumption in Austria currently goes into the operation of buildings. According to the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, space heating and air conditioning in private households account for around a quarter of the total final energy requirement – only a third of which comes from renewable energy sources. More efficiency and the expansion of renewable energies in the building sector are essential factors in making Austria climate-neutral by 2024. Concrete as a building material can play an important role here.

The storage mass of concrete, combined with its excellent thermal conductivity, contributes to a pleasant room temperature not only when heating but also when cooling buildings. With thermal component activation, you can create well-tempered room air without air conditioning, even on increasingly hot summer days, with low operating costs“, explains Sebastian Spaun, Managing Director of the Association of the Austrian Cement Industry (VÖZ) and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Beton Dialog Austria.

The innovative concept of thermal component activation, in which pipes are installed in concrete floor ceilings, combines heating and cooling in one system and can be excellently combined with renewable energy sources such as geothermal energy, wind or sun. Scientifically supported measurements show: Heating and cooling costs in buildings with component activation are only 2 to 3 euros per square meter per year. A win-win situation for residents, energy networks and climate and energy goals.

Technology that is becoming increasingly popular

Thermal component activation is enjoying increasing popularity in Austria. The innovative energy concept ensures more sustainability and cost savings in year-round room temperature control not only in residential buildings, but also in schools, service buildings and sports halls. The interactive “Innovation Map of Component Activation” from the Construction Future Agency shows, among other things, construction projects in Austria in which thermal component activation has been implemented so far – from new buildings to renovations of apartment buildings and public buildings such as schools and universities. The map also contains a list of experts in the respective region who specialize in this technology. “Interest in integrating thermal component activation into construction projects is increasing. Our goal with the ‘Innovation Card Component Activation’ is to support access to experts and promote the implementation of innovative construction projects“, explains Gunther Graupner, Managing Director of the Construction Future Agency.

The innovation map for component activation currently lists more than 120 buildings with thermal component activation in four countries (Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy), around 70 of which are in Austria.
