On February 24th, the war of Russia against Ukraine marks the third time. With fatal consequences for all those who still live in Ukraine, but also those who are on the run and build a new life in other places. The Johanniter support you where you need help.
Defusions, fear and loss shape life, especially in the front areas of Ukraine, which are exposed to daily air raids: “People live under partially dramatic conditions,” says Florian Beck, Johanniter program officer for Ukraine. “They barricaded themselves in basements or the ruins of their houses and hope to be spared from the strokes.”
Johanniter project “Road of Hope – Street of Hope”
With Eleos, the long -term partner organization on site, the Johanniter therefore carry out the “Road of Hope – Straße of Hope” project. Helps bring people from villages close to the border in regions deeper inside. Every kilometer counts. “The people who still live on the front after three years of war are often old and sometimes no longer physically unable to leave the house. Or the means are simply missing,” explains Beck. A total of 381 people have been evacuated in the past six months. At your new place of residence you will receive support with food vouchers, hygiene packages and legal questions, for example, to reproduce lost identification papers.
Aid for the front areas of survival
In addition to the evacuations, the Johanniter continues to take care of the daily needs of the population in the front areas. There is hardly any electricity, fluent water or heating. That is why our partner organizations continue to regularly bring relief supplies from everyday needs to the villages. Before the winter, firewood, ovens, generators and materials were also distributed to seal the houses. In total, the Johanniter supported 280,000 people with their programs in 2024.
The support of the refugees in Germany
Since the beginning of the war, the Johanniter accident aid has initiated 80 donation-financed projects in Germany for and with Ukrainian refugees. More than 30,000 refugees were thus supported in the long term in their arrival and integration in Germany.
At the same time, cities and municipalities all over Germany support the Johanniter in the short and medium-term accommodation and support of refugees. With the operation of initial reception and community accommodation as well as additional advice, care and integration offers, newly arrived people are accompanied in their first steps in Germany.
Together with the aid organizations Arbeiters-Samariter-Bund (ASB), German Lebens-Rettung-Gesellschaft (DLRG), German Red Cross (DRK) and Maltese Hilfsdienst (MHD), the Johanniter set both additional social care and medical return transports for seriously ill And injured patients from Ukraine who were brought to Germany through the medical evacuation of the European Union (Medevac). In close coordination with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and for Home (BMI) and the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), the project is financed by funds from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund of the European Union and the Federal Foreign Office.
