“Home, Foreign Home”: Difficult situation for Ukrainian refugees in Austria

On April 7th at 1:35 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Marin Berlakovich presents the ORF magazine “Heimat Fremde Heimat” on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 1:35 p.m. on ORF 2 with the following contributions:

Difficult situation for Ukrainian refugees in Austria

Around 70,000 people from Ukraine currently live in Austria. At the beginning of the refugee movement two years ago, there was still great hope that the often highly qualified Ukrainians would be quickly integrated into the labor market: although some hurdles for them – such as employment permits – have been lifted, only around 17,000 refugees from Ukraine are still employed . Why is integration into the labor market so slow? And how are Ukrainian students doing in Austria’s educational institutions? Helga Lazar and Miriam Ressi from “Report” report.

Women working for the public

Standing up for the general public – that’s what Julia Petschnig from the Together association, Asha Osman from the Neighbors association and the Tyrolean hotelier Petra Falkner do every day. With its Together Points, refugee homes and restaurants, Petschnig helps many people who would fall by the wayside without support. The Somali Osman has already informed hundreds of Somali women in Austria about the dangers of genital mutilation and supports girls and women with advice and support so that they can seize their opportunities in Austria. Tyrolean entrepreneur Petra Falkner supports 35 young refugees in her free time – from the initial official interview with asylum seekers to the driving license test. Sabina Zwitter met the three women.
