Campaign start
On Friday, the ÖVP officially opened the election campaign with Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s keynote speech. For an hour, Nehammer presented his “Austria plan” to 1,500 supporters in Wels. The most important keywords:
Performance, security and family. The coalition partner had to accept one or two swipes. But what effect do such speeches actually have? Holocaust commemoration
Saturday was International Holocaust Remembrance Day established by the UN. On January 27, 1945, the Red Army advancing from the east liberated the Auschwitz camp complex. In Austria it took more than three months longer until the Americans liberated the Mauthausen concentration camp on May 5th. The victims of the Holocaust were remembered this week in the European Parliament in Brussels and the Austrian Parliament in Vienna. Claus Bruckmann reports.
billion patients
After more than a year of waiting, the Court of Auditors’ report on the merger and the financial situation of social insurance from December 2022 will come to the National Council plenary next week. The Court of Auditors’ criticism was devastating. There was never the promised billion of patients, nor was the harmonization of benefits for those insured successful. Instead, the Austrian Health Insurance Fund, the one with the most insured people, expects a loss of 386 million euros in 2023. Susanne Däubel spoke to the health spokespersons of all parties and the chairman of the ÖGK on the sidelines of the committee.
