“Hohes Haus” about a heated exchange

On July 7th at 12 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON

Vienna (OTS) Rebekka Salzer presents the ORF parliamentary magazine “Hohes Haus” on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at 12 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON with the following topics:

Please wait

In the last plenary week before the summer break, the government parties wanted to show once again what they can do. Around 60 laws were passed. The announced Criminal Procedure Law Amendment Act, which is intended to introduce new rules for the confiscation of cell phones, has not been passed. After massive criticism from the judiciary, the responsible Green Minister Alma Zadić announced that the review process would be extended. And this despite the fact that the governing factions ÖVP and Greens in the responsible justice committee have already voted for it. Susanne Däubel reports.

Hot exit

An eventful plenary week came to an end in Parliament on Friday. From Wednesday to Friday, the members of the National Council met for the last time before the summer break. Although further meetings are planned for September shortly before the election, there are numerous legislative resolutions on the agenda at the end of the legislative period. A motion of no confidence by the FPÖ against the Green Climate Protection Minister was rejected, the ÖVP supported Gewessler despite the coalition crisis. Overall, things were quite heated and there was more than just a hint of an election campaign. David Moidl on the last debates in the plenary session before the summer break.

Vacation on demand

The “meeting-free period” now begins in the National Council. This year it lasts until September 10th. The National Council does not normally meet during this period – but there can be no question of a parliamentary holiday, because the MPs have to prepare for being called to a special session in parliament at short notice. A procedure that has happened again and again in recent years and that could also occur this year. Caroline Picker has asked around how MPs are adapting to this.
