“High House”: New genetic engineering, corona wave and possible upper limit for cash

On December 10th at 12 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Rebekka Salzer will present the following articles in the ORF parliamentary magazine “Hohes Haus” on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at 12 p.m. on ORF 2:

New genetic engineering

The European Union wants to be carbon neutral by 2050. In order to achieve the desired climate goals, the EU has quickly adopted various legislation. But the Green Deal has been facing harsh pressures for some time now. The law to restore nature is being questioned, glyphosate has been extended by ten years, and the EU Parliament has overturned the regulation on the sustainable use of plant protection products. And there is intense controversy surrounding the development and approval of climate- and disease-resistant plant varieties using new genetic engineering (NGT).

Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig is a guest in the studio.

Corona-Welle

Austria is currently in a Corona wave. However, there are no longer any measures. Firstly, because it has become more difficult to win people over. And: because the population is better immunized. The disease has lost its terror. Susanne Däubel spoke to experts about how we are currently dealing with the virus.

Cash is cool

The importance of cash is decreasing in the European Union. In Austria, 70 percent of all transactions are still processed analogue, in the Netherlands and Finland it is only 20 percent. The EU wants to introduce an upper limit when paying with cash and justifies this with possible money laundering after drug deals or possible terrorist financing. If the EU decides on such an upper limit, even an Austrian constitutional law could not prevent it. The Finance Committee of the National Council has dealt with a referendum on the issue of cash. Claus Bruckmann was there.
