On May 5th at 12 p.m. on ORF 2
Vienna (OTS) – Rebekka Salzer presents the ORF parliamentary magazine “Hohes Haus” on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 12 p.m. on ORF 2 with the following topics:
Scary warfare
At the most recent National Council meeting, an all-party motion was passed rather unnoticed that deals with a topic that could still be very important worldwide: it is about weapon systems that are autonomously controlled by artificial intelligence. Semi-automatic weapons that, for example, seek their own target are already in use around the world. But one person still has the last word. However, the industry is already researching fully autonomous systems that can start themselves. Before that happens, many states would like to establish regulations that comply with international law. Austria is leading the way. Claus Bruckmann asked around.
Bruno Hofbauer, deputy chief of staff, is in the studio.
Pros and cons of cell phone surveillance
Monitoring the cell phone communications of terrorist suspects with the help of spy software – the so-called Federal Trojan has already made several attempts in Austria. The last state trojan law was overturned by the Constitutional Court in 2019 – the invasion of privacy was too serious. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has now presented a new draft law. But the new attempt is also being viewed very critically by experts. Would a legally anchored federal Trojan even find a majority in parliament? Marcus Blecha asked.
Forgotten duty?
The two committees of inquiry are nearing their end. Next week, Herbert Kickl, who has recently been under investigation for possible advertising corruption, should testify for the second time in the committee set up by the ÖVP. He canceled due to vacation reasons. René Benko has announced that he will be joining the COFAG-U committee at the end of May. He has already canceled three times, partly on the grounds that he doesn’t want to incriminate himself. Susanne Däubel spoke to experts about the obligation to testify and tell the truth in the U-Committee.
