Henkell Freixenet Austria will remain number 1 on the domestic sparkling wine market in 2023

With a proud market share of 36 percent, the quality sparkling wine producer successfully defends its position

Vienna (OTS) Henkell Freixenet Austria can look back on an extremely successful financial year and continues to hold its own at the top despite global challenges. With a proud market share of 36 percent, the quality sparkling wine producer successfully defends its position. With a market share of 16 percent, Henkell Sekt once again secured its top position as the largest sparkling wine brand in Austria in terms of volume.(1) Sparkling wine variants such as non-alcoholic, rosé and piccolo continue their success.

Despite a declining sparkling wine market in the trade, which recorded a decline of minus 5 percent in terms of volume but increased by 3.5 percent in terms of value, Henkell Freixenet was able to defend its market leadership with 36 percent. In the Austrian food retail sector, over 6.5 million bottles of sparkling wine from Henkell Freixenet were sold in 2023, with Henkell Sekt once again holding the lead with a volume market share of 16 percent.

Austria is one of the largest and most diverse, but also most price-sensitive sparkling wine markets in an international comparison. Despite the challenges of a volatile wine market and rising costs, we have managed to be number 1 in the market for the fifth year in a row. We owe this to our loyal sparkling wine fans, a good partnership with our suppliers and of course our dedicated team“, says Philipp Gattermayer, Managing Director of Henkell Freixenet Austria, commenting on the successful year.

Alcohol-free boom – Henkell Freixenet leads the way with over 45 percent market share

The development in the non-alcoholic segment is particularly encouraging; Austrian consumers are increasingly turning to alternative, non-alcoholic moments of enjoyment, without foregoing the special champagne feeling when toasting. With growth of 7.1 percent, the non-alcoholic sparkling wine segment is experiencing a further upswing. Henkell Freixenet recognized this trend back in 2015 and has been playing a key role in shaping the development of this growing segment ever since. The sparkling wine manufacturer dominates with a quantitative market share of over 45 percent. Henkell Non-Alcoholic is particularly impressive, with growth of 28 percent thanks to its refreshing and balanced taste in the usual Henkell quality.

Rosé im Trend – Henkell Freixenet an der Spitze mit Kupferberg und Henkell Rosé

Rosé sparkling wines also continue to enjoy increasing popularity. They are particularly valued because of their multifaceted flavor profiles and their versatility as a food accompaniment. With Kupferberg Rosé (17 percent market share) and Henkell Rosé (11 percent market share), two products from Henkell Freixenet are at the top of the rosé sparkling wine. Henkell Freixenet is the only manufacturer that offers rosé variants from its own wineries in all categories – sparkling wine, prosecco, cava, champagne and crémant.

Dominance in small format – every second bottle comes from Henkell Freixenet

Who doesn’t know him: the Piccolo. The name for the sparkling wine in the 0.2 liter small bottle has been protected by Henkell since 1935. So it’s no wonder that Henkell Sekt leads the ranking of small formats with an impressive 46 percent share. Together with Kupferberg and Mionetto Prosecco, every second small bottle comes from Henkell Freixenet.

Mionetto Prosecco – quality is convincing

Despite a somewhat declining Prosecco market, Mionetto Prosecco was able to assert itself successfully and gained market share in sales and revenue. The secret of success lies in the successful combination of centuries of experience and contemporary technology, the best raw materials and conscientious quality control throughout the entire production process. In addition, the traditions and cultural peculiarities of Valdobbiadene have never been lost sight of. The brand has embodied the Italian lifestyle for more than 135 years and proves that quality can be successful even under difficult market conditions.

Outlook 2024

For 2024, Henkell Freixenet Austria plans to further strengthen its position and find innovative ways to continue to meet the needs of consumers. The company relies on permanent investments in quality, close collaboration with winemakers and innovative visions of the future as the cornerstone of success.

“Our range is valued for its excellent quality, and this is exactly where we want to appeal to our customers even more. We are convinced that we can further expand our success in 2024 by continuing to focus on quality and innovation”said Gattermayer in conclusion.
