His debut was called “My Heaven Burning” in 2010 and was called “Tagesspiegel” “a fiction fireworks”. Heinrich von der Hairs fifth novel is called “grill party in Eichforst”, there is also a lot burning, you think. While his earlier books were based on his own dramatic experiences without indulging in a fashionable autofictional navel show, the new work has become a social novel.
The outer plot is very simple. A grill party takes place. A festival that begins cheerfully, but ends in chaos, as you know from dozens of novels and also expects here. But Heinrich von der Haar, extreme living conditions of a Münsterland farm escaped, polarized in the revolting Berlin of the 68, is consistent. The title turns out to be a painful metaphor: not only a biocompatible lamb is grilled, no, the entire bourgeois society is fueled, inexperienced or knowingly annihilation. Consequently, this results from the current conflicts and behaviors of people, their ignorance, the pursuit of profit and advantage – very realistic. That makes the book special.
A grill party has many guests, which can be confusing. The author solves this difficulty by reproducing the action and different perspectives alternately by other people, juggling with daring love constellations. The mental relationships and the exciting action are the strengths of the novel.
Heinrich von der Haar does not protect his characters. They come together hard and the mental devastation are shocking.
The ambitious entrepreneur Wilhelm Herzberg is looking forward to his 50th birthday as well as a procession that has to demonstrate the laboriously generated prosperity. The relic is the grilled lamb. But the book lifts with the nightly campaign of two frustrated young people to pierce the car tires in order to give the High Society a memo for their climate creep. Influencer Gloria, the daughter of the would -be, brings the topic to the public by exposing the greed of the guests in her hashtag “carnivore” – and thereby disavustating her beloved parents and their friends and business partners.
The party is associated with great expectations. The company has debt what Herzberg does not hesitate, and in the morning he learns that a large order has burst. He hopes for rescue from his youth love Patricia von Dyke, who leads a hedge fund enrolled in Singapore and is flown in with the helicopter. With borrowed money, she buys jungle areas from equally windy investors in order to sell it again with clearing in value. From the hair, a trained bank clerk and sociologist, it knows how to understand the machinations of the speculators, including their lying, supposedly human motifs.
Herzberg and the politician Rico Recknagel want to participate in the fund, albeit bad conscience. Gloria and her friend Murat, one avoided by all of the Turk, are eavesdropping on the parts. The daughter, fanatized by her climate alarmism, is out of anger. She films the scene. But after she has put her clip “secret investment of urwaldlod”, she, in addition to a few positive clicks, overturns a flood of defamation, her, a “financial whore”, advertising is subordinate to the Black Star Fund. The whole idiocy of the “social media” so anti -social is rolled up.
Heinrich von der Haar does not protect his characters. They come together hard and the mental devastation are shocking. Herzberg’s marriage is broken, his beautiful, surgically styled Wiebke seems to have fun with his best friend Rico Recknagel. But what does friend mean in an incidental bourgeois society, where nobody does something out of inner need, even affection, but is negotiated or blackmailed with consideration? Wiebke confesses her pregnancy, also towards Rico. He is only ready to participate in Patricia’s funds when Herzberg recognizes fatherhood. His marriage to the cancer patient, baseless Rita, which feels despised and ends in the Suff, is only a curse.
To make matters worse, it becomes a smell that Herzberg’s company Bulgarian undeclared workers employs. The article in the “Eichforster Kurier”, which should document the glory of the festival, ends critically. Herzberg’s reputation is endangered, especially Recknagel’s career, he is in the election campaign. Murat, who observes the division of the company from an unusable distance, is accused of lying. He threatens a stay in the youth center. Which frightens his father Tom Rosing all the more; It is the urge of the upstart that hopes to be recognized by the well -heeled clientele. The father-son conflict does not escalate other than Gloria’s disappointment from the parents.

However, a forest fire spreads not far from the Herzberg property. The noise of extinguishing helicopters and columns of smoke on the horizon worries a little the round of table, but nothing can disturb the cheerfulness maintained. It is unbearably hot. Gloria Spult deducted her charges in view of the air conditioning. When wind arises? A firestorm? Flee? It’s out of the question. All sorts of dismissals still have to be clarified. The contract with Patricia’s jungle fund has not yet been signed. And you hang on property, even if it costs life. Tom Rosing, who tries to impart a job in Patricia’s real estate fund, who is trying to impart a job in Patricia’s real estate, is sophisticated like nothing. But he should teach a share for the fund. He withdraws to help the fire brigade extinguish. What Herzberg is doing. He needs it if the risk is to be averted. Again and again he tries to calm his guests with the sprinkler system, which is efficient enough, with supplies in the basement, with gas masks in all cases.
But nothing stops the firestorm. Ash falls on the tables. Sirens howls. The electricity fails, the landline is silent. Eichforst should be evacuated. The helicopter crashes. Herzberg and his rejected Wiebke die arm in arm. Murat, as his father rushed into extinguishing, returns and saves Gloria at the last minute. “How can it be that we know which catastrophe we are running and completely ignore it?” Posts Gloria. Yes, how can that be?
The novel is well structured. Change auttorial descriptions and inner monologue. The relationships between the individuals to each other are finest, with all their undertones and tones, hopes and cursions; This is close to the reader. It would be critical to note that the author annoys trivial language clichés. This does not only have to be seen negatively. There will be many readers who are satisfied with the profound metaphors too demanding. Be it. An important book that aims at the center of our ecological and social misery.
