Ajda Sticker will present a special edition of the ORF magazine “Heimat Fremde Heimat” about the Viennese Czech ethnic group on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 1:35 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON:
After the end of the Second World War, it looked as if the Viennese Czech ethnic group would cease to exist. The return migration directed by the then Czechoslovak state decimated the ethnic group by half, to around 20,000 members. It was the traditional Czech organizations such as the Sokol gymnastics club or the “Komenský” school that ensured the continued existence of the ethnic group in Vienna. From this dramatic time, the amateur filmmaker František Bouchal left behind around two hours of black and white film material that documents the activities of the most important clubs. Dalibor Hýsek reports on how the ethnic group is doing today.
