What being Austrian means
Waltz, schnitzel and skiing – terms that are often associated with Austria abroad. Austria is not only very diverse culturally, culinary and landscape, but also ethnically. The question of what a real Austrian actually is is not easy to answer. Because people with an immigration background are also part of Austria and feel “real” and at home here. However, they are often denied this feeling. Ajda Sticker set out to find out what constitutes Austrian identity.
Russian voices against Putin
The news of the death of the Russian dissident Alexei Navalny also caused horror among Russians living in Austria. But the war in Ukraine and the associated resentment towards everything that is Russian is also causing problems for Russians in Austria who are critical of the regime. Sabina Zwitter spoke to the artist Yulia Izmaylova, who emigrated to Carinthia, and the Russian-born Salzburg author Vladimir Vertlib about their former homeland.
When the care comes from Colombia
“I can only say the best about her,” explains a resident of the retirement home in Kapfenberg. He talks about his carer Diana Maria Tapasco Calvo and his carer Felipe Mantilla Rodríguez. The two moved to Styria from Colombia two years ago. An Austrian agency gave them the job. Due to a lack of staff, beds are empty in homes and hospitals across Austria. 200,000 positions need to be filled in this country by 2050. Jennifer Espinel Gomez from Bogotá will accept one of them. The 33-year-old mother will move to Austria in May – alone. She would like to bring her two daughters with her as soon as she has settled in.
