Bicultural and binational: Marriage with hurdles

According to Statistics Austria, every fourth marriage in Austria in 2022 was binational. It is now normal for people of different nationalities to say yes to each other. But binational marriages are associated with hurdles, especially because of foreign law regulations. Even married couples who have the same nationality but come from different cultures sometimes have to struggle with obstacles – in the family and in society. Three couples spoke to Adriana Jurić about the obstacles they had to remove in order to be together.

War refugees: With therapy against the trauma

Toita Dzhamalova fled Chechnya to Graz with her children in 2012. “When I see men in uniform in Austria, I get scared,” she says. She has experienced two wars. When she finally arrives in Austria, the danger disappears. But the fear remains. Dzhamalova gets post-traumatic stress disorder. About one in three The person who flees suffers from the illness. The consequences are tantrums, depression and panic attacks. For many of those affected, coping with everyday life is impossible. Alexandra Köck from ZEBRA, an intercultural therapy center, is calling for more resources in view of the large number of people on the waiting list. Leon Hoffmann -Ostenhof reports.
