More Turkish asylum seekers in Austria
Oppositionists, dissidents and minorities – more and more people from Turkey are applying for asylum in Austria. In the last ten months alone, almost 7,500 applications were registered, which is more than in the entire previous year. In October, Turks were in second place in the asylum application statistics. Only from the civil war-torn country of Syria did more people seek protection in Austria. But what drives people to flee Turkey? Roma in Austria: Tough fight for recognition
In December 1993, Roma were recognized as the sixth ethnic group in Austria. The history of the ethnic group is one of exclusion and discrimination: they have been persecuted and excluded since their arrival in Europe. During National Socialism, 90 percent of the Roma and Sinti living in Austria were murdered. Even after the war they were subjected to reprisals. Many fled into the anonymity of the big cities, some stayed in their home communities and tried to fight against ongoing antigypsyism. A lot has changed since then, but Austria’s youngest ethnic group does not seem to have reached its goal yet. Katharina Graf-Janoska reports.
Young poet on the road to success
Elif Duygu has been conquering the poetry slam stages in Austria since June 2018. With “Heimat Fremde Heimat” the Viennese with Turkish roots talks about her literary beginnings, the importance of diversity on stages and the identity problems of the second generation of migrants.
