The end of the carnival season is traditionally celebrated in Austria with costumes, donuts and a lot of ruckus. But discussions about costumes that are intended to represent members of ethnic minorities are becoming more and more frequent – and these are often exotic, exaggerated and stereotypical. Samuel Mago researched how members of minorities feel about this and what cultural appropriation is all about during carnival time.
Coffee – on the trail of black gold
Cappuccino, Extended, Melange: The art of brewing coffee has a centuries-old tradition in Vienna. The charm of Viennese coffee houses is world-famous, but the culture surrounding the hot drink does not stop at the gates of the traditional cafés. The federal capital has a lot to offer, from Ethiopian coffee ceremonies from the country where coffee originates, to Turkish and Arabic coffee at the Brunnenmarkt, to the special coffee enjoyment that is seen as the third coffee revolution. But what makes coffee cultural and how is it best drunk? Samuel Mago follows the trail of black gold.
“Foresight” with Robert Palfrader
Robert Palfrader, former innkeeper, cabaret artist and actor, can afford a lot as the nation’s favorite. Palfrader packages unpleasant truths about xenophobia, racism, hatred and envy in such a way that his audience can accept them with a laugh. Over the past two years, the cabaret artist has focused on his origins. In the series “Weitblicke” he tells Sabina Zwitter about his Ladin roots. In general, the preservation of minority cultures and languages is of great importance to Palfrader.
