harvest.dank.festival. Makes the school day a nature experience
Vienna (OTS) –

Around 1,000 elementary school children exchanged their school benches for exciting natural experiences in the middle of the city. As part of the harvest.dank.festival. The ecosocial forum was again waiting for a varied educational program with numerous hands -on stations for Viennese children. Playful offers conveyed the 7- to 10-year-old forest, nature and agriculture. Expert: Inside, the children accompanied on exciting journey of discovery: they explained the differences between wheat, rye, oats and other cereals and clearly showed how many rolls are created from a square meter of wheat. At other stations, the children could practice milking or perceive the hidden sounds of nature with modern bioakoustics – from bats to crawling a beetle. “For our students: This is a unique experience inside – you can discover things that never get so alive in the classroom. This makes education really tangible,” says Elisabeth Fuchs, management of the Vienna Education Directorate.

Enthusiasm on both sides

The enthusiasm was not only noticeable among the children present, but also with the experts at the University of Natural Resources and the University, the University of Veterinary Medicine, the National Parks and other institutions that accompanied the young curious heads in search of traces. In a playful way, students were able to get to know agriculture and forestry inside and discover how food can get from the field to the plate. “It is great to see how much curiosity children bring for nature and agriculture if they can experience and attack them themselves,” said Hans Mayrhofer, general secretary of the ecosocial forum, who also looked after a hands -on station on that day.
