Increase the proportion of women in university degree programs on digitalization, sustainability and technology

Vienna (OTS) Women are often massively underrepresented in fields of study that have to do with digitalization, sustainability and technology. In order to increase the proportion of women in these areas, waff has introduced a scholarship for Viennese women who study part-time. For a bachelor’s degree you get 10,000 euros if you have the appropriate academic success, and for a master’s degree you get 7,500 euros. After just three semesters, 123 working women are studying with the support of waff at one of Vienna’s four universities of applied sciences, including AI Engineering, Packaging Technology and Sustainability or Technical Sales Management. Scholarships are currently being awarded for those 33 part-time technical university degree programs in Vienna in which the proportion of women is less than 50 percent.

City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke sees multiple benefits from the waff scholarship: “The waff training initiative brings together equality and economic policy goals. On the one hand, women are given the opportunity to individually change and advance in highly sought-after industries. On the other hand, it is a measure to meet the high demand for skilled workers, especially in the areas of digitalization, sustainability and technology. The City of Vienna is making 13.7 million euros available for this training initiative. I wish the 123 waff scholarship holders all the best for their studies and hope that many Viennese women will do the same.”

Monika Nigl, head of the waff advice center for careers and further training, sees this offer from waff as an opportunity for women to advance more strongly into previously male-dominated areas: “Careers in the areas of digitalization, sustainability and technology in particular often offer attractive pay and working conditions. That’s why our training initiative is ideal for all women who are interested in these areas to turn their dreams into reality.
