Handover of command of the 4th Reconnaissance and Artillery Battalion

Today, on August 1, 2024, command of the Reconnaissance and Artillery Battalion 4 (AAB4) was handed over to Lieutenant Colonel Matthias Wimmer in the presence of Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. As a visible symbol, the field symbol was presented in the Liechtenstein barracks in Allentsteig. Colonel Matthias Wimmer takes over command from Colonel of the General Staff Service Georg Schiller. The 42-year-old is the sixth battalion commander of the AAB4.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “Lieutenant Colonel Matthias Wimmer has the necessary experience and competence to lead the Reconnaissance and Artillery Battalion 4. His performance to date has shown that he is ideally suited to take on this responsibility. I would like to thank Colonel of the General Staff Service Georg Schiller for the reliable execution of his duties and wish Lieutenant Colonel Wimmer all the best in his new role – I trust that he will lead the battalion into a successful future.”

Lieutenant Colonel Matthias Wimmer takes over as commander of AAB4. After he enlisted as a military servant in 2000, he fulfilled various functions within the battalion. In 2011 he graduated from the Theresian Military Academy in the artillery branch. Before that, he gained experience as a non-commissioned officer in the infantry, armored infantry and reconnaissance branches. Most recently, Lieutenant Colonel Wimmer was deputy commander of AAB4 as well as operations and planning officer. During his career he completed several assistance missions and foreign assignments in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

The Reconnaissance and Artillery Battalion 4 is stationed in Allentsteig and Horn. The battalion ensures the information needs of the 4th Panzergrenadier Brigade and provides extensive fire support with artillery: The reconnaissance officers observe and report enemy actions – they are on the front line. The artillery fights targets over long distances – the Federal Army has modern technical equipment, such as electronic fire control systems, laser rangefinders and navigation and aiming systems.
