GW on Care Day 2024: 24-hour care – the blind spot of care policy

The situation for 24-hour carers in Austria is still highly precarious!

The independent carers do system maintenance work every day. It is a disgrace on the part of the ÖVP-led Ministry of the Interior to make it so difficult for them to access the health system.

Vienna (OTS) May 12th is Nursing Day and is an opportunity to point out the enormous achievements, but also shortcomings, in nursing. One group of people that has so far been excluded is that of 24-hour carers. Forced into the (pseudo) self-employment that has been established since the legal regulation in 2007, they are severely disadvantaged in terms of their social security and their access to benefits. For example, they are still unable to access low-threshold photo registration for the e-card because ÖVP Interior Minister Karner has not finalized the necessary decree for weeks.

The directive on the introduction of e-card photos, which was adopted long ago but has not yet been implemented by the ÖVP-led Ministry of the Interior, creates almost insurmountable hurdles in access to medical care for 24-hour carers, who are massively unsure about how to proceed when visiting a doctor have.

Despite the important work in a system-preserving role, 24-hour carers are confronted with the social insecurity of entrepreneurship and precarious income conditions.

The independent carers do system maintenance work every day. It is a disgrace on the part of the ÖVP-led Ministry of the Interior to make it so difficult for them to access the health system.“, says Sabine Jungwirth, federal spokeswoman for the Green Economy
