GSMA AND SHIELDS INTRODUCE NEW TRADING PLATFORM DESIGNED TO HELP THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY ACHIEVE ENVIRONMENTAL AND FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

The GSMA today, in collaboration with the solution provider Shields Environmental Group (Shields) unveiled a network equipment trading platform designed to help the telecommunications industry achieve its financial and environmental sustainability goals.

The cloud-based global platform called GSMA Equipment Marketplace will help telecommunications providers around the world reuse, repurpose and recycle their network resources, helping them achieve their net zero environmental goals and ensure financial sustainability.

By making the service available to its members, which include more than 1,000 mobile operators and device manufacturers around the world, the GSMA hopes that the service will transform the way networks – whether fixed, mobile or private – are procured and distributed be put into operation can change. This, in turn, will support the industry in its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and minimize the extraction of environmentally harmful raw materials for the manufacture of telecommunications equipment.

The GSMA estimates that the manufacture of network equipment (including material extraction and processing) and the construction of network sites and cell towers generate more than 30 million tonnes of CO2e per year. The GSMA Equipment Marketplace can help reduce these numbers by enabling operators to reuse and recycle more of their assets, helping the industry achieve its goal of becoming net zero by 2050 at the latest to be.
