Groundbreaking ceremony in Ebreichsdorf: Wien Energie is building a powerful wind farm

Vienna (OTS) –

A new wind farm is being built in the Lower Austrian municipality of Ebreichsdorf: Wien Energie is building nine Vestas V117 wind turbines there with a total output of 31 megawatts and investing around 56 million euros. The wind farm will be one of Wien Energie’s most powerful systems and will generate 68,000 megawatt hours of climate-neutral electricity annually. That’s enough to supply around 20,000 households – or three times Ebreichsdorf.

“The future of energy supply lies in the use of renewable and local resources and wind power plays a key role in this. The wind farm in Ebreichsdorf is an important project for the region to guarantee a clean and secure energy supply. We are pleased about another milestone on the path to climate neutrality“, says Peter Hanke, City Councilor for Economics, Finance and Vienna Public Utilities.

With today’s groundbreaking ceremony, preparations for construction work on the wind farm begin. The planned commissioning of the first systems is scheduled for the end of 2025, and all systems are expected to be completed in mid-2026. In total, the wind farm will consist of nine Vestas V117 wind turbines. Wien Energie wants to increase wind energy output to 350 megawatts by 2030. “From 2026, the new systems will supply tens of thousands of households with green electricity and save around 40,000 tons of CO2. Wind power is a central part of our strategy to further reduce dependence on fossil fuels and ensure a climate-friendly energy future. We are pleased to welcome the municipality of Ebreichsdorf as a partner in this mission.”emphasizes Michael Strebl, Chairman of the Wien Energie Management Board.

Intensive exchange with citizens

Planning for the Ebreichsdorf wind farm began in 2011. Since then, the project has gone through a long approval phase and has been thoroughly examined as part of nature conservation studies to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental standards. “The energy transition is a central economic driver for Austria. The expansion of renewable energies such as wind and hydropower sustainably strengthens our industrial location. Wien Energie is investing more than 50 million euros here in Ebreichsdorf alone. We are pleased that we can now give the starting signal for the construction of this powerful wind farm,” adds Wien Energie managing director Karl Gruber.

An important part of the project was the involvement of local citizens and the community. The last referendum showed that the majority of the population approved of the wind farm. “The construction of the wind farm in our community is an important step for the sustainable future of Ebreichsdorf. Wien Energie has already successfully built wind turbines in our neighboring communities, Pottendorf and Trumau, and we are pleased to be able to continue this positive development here too. It is our responsibility to actively shape the energy transition and to supply our community with clean, green electricity.”said LAbg. Wolfgang Kocevar, Mayor of Ebreichsdorf.
