A new fire and safety center will be built in Kirchberg am Wagram by April 2026. The construction work began with a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, Thursday, with numerous guests of honor, led by State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner and State Councilor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig. “A real project for the future is being created here: the Kirchberg Volunteer Fire Department is getting a new home that is up to date,” said State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner at the ceremony.
At the same time, Mikl-Leitner thanked the fire departments in Lower Austria and in particular the firefighters in Kirchberg am Wagram: “Over 100,000 comrades volunteer in Lower Austria and are ready for action around the clock, day after day.” The fire brigade has the operational readiness only proved during the flood disaster in September last year: “The Kirchberg weirs were active beyond the district’s borders in Tullnerfeld and showed what Firefighters can.”
Around five million euros will be invested in the new fire brigade and security center, with the state of Lower Austria covering a third of the costs, the state governor continued: “Only those who are well equipped and have a good infrastructure can work professionally in an emergency and in a disaster to help our population.”
State fire brigade commander Dietmar Fahrafellner wished the Kirchberg fire brigade all the best: “An adequate house has been well planned here, a project is being created here for the future: I wish an accident-free construction site and, above all, a lot of motivation for future operations.”
Mayor Franz Aigner described: “The new building of the fire department and security center is a once-in-a-century project for our market town.” The area covers around 6,000 square meters; according to Aigner, the usable area is around 1,200 square meters: “The vehicle hall with four doors has an additional wash box equipped and with rooms for respiratory protection, workshop and technology. In the administration wing there is the fire brigade command, changing rooms, an emergency kitchen on the ground floor, and a training room and youth fire brigade room on the upper floor. A blackout center will also be created.”
Fire brigade commander Martin Freiberger-Scharl added: “With the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony, we are laying the foundation stone for a once-in-a-century project that goes far beyond just a building. We create a place of safety, community and future prospects.”
