KWG is building an open-air PV system on the Schlatt railway embankment
Schwanenstadt (OTS) – A significant step towards renewable energies was taken on February 9th with the symbolic groundbreaking for a ground-mounted PV system in the municipality of Schlatt, Vöcklabruck district. A new PV system with a planned output of around 1,000 kWp is being built on a former railway embankment.
“The PV system on the former Schlatt railway embankment is expected to generate electricity for around 400 households annually. This represents an important contribution to the sustainable energy supply of the region,” says Peter J. Zehetner, Managing Director of the energy supplier KWG, proudly. The municipality of Schlatt provides the land for this solar power plant and in return receives part of the electricity generated by the new power plant. “We will be able to cover all of the community’s own electricity needs,” explains Christian Mader, mayor of the Schlatt community. An interesting detail on the side: The shovels used for the groundbreaking were already used at the groundbreaking of the KWG Deutenham hydroelectric power plant at the end of the 1980s.
In addition to the construction of the PV system, comprehensive ecological accompanying measures are planned before, during and after construction. This includes, among other things, the creation of a wildlife corridor and measures to promote local biodiversity. Before construction began, a survey of reptile species was carried out, which will be continued through monitoring over the next few years.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, KWG Managing Director Peter J. Zehetner and Mayor Christian Mader planted a tree as a symbol of local commitment to the energy transition and environmental protection. “With this solar power plant we show that through constructive cooperation between energy suppliers and the community, it can be possible to convert former traffic areas into efficient and nature-friendly green electricity systems,” said Christian Mader and Peter J. Zehetner, pleased with the good partnership-based implementation of this project. The new PV system in Schlatt is not only a step towards renewable energy, but also an example of responsible and sustainable planning in harmony with nature. From the current perspective, commissioning is planned for the second quarter of 2024.
