From April 19, the Großglockner High Alpine Road will be passable again. 2025 is a very special year-the legendary panoramic road is celebrating its 90th anniversary, inspiring since its opening in 1935 with a unique combination of nature experience, engineering and tourist attraction and has been in Austria for exactly ten years. The legendary “Rotation Plants – System Wallack” have been in use for 70 years.
Fusch on Großglocknerstraße / Heiligenblut am Großglockner: Spring is already evident in the valleys from its mild side and for the first time in almost 50 years, at the Easter weekend, Austria’s monument opens its gates again: The Großglockner Hochalpenstrasse is off Saturday, April 19, 2025 officially again Released for traffic!
Get ready for summer operation. As every year, the symbolic pierce at the Hochtor (Salzburg Border Salzburg Border) marks the starting shot in the summer season – as early as it is rarely before. For our more than 1,000 tourist partners and their holiday guests in the regions north and south of the Hohe Tauern, it has therefore been possible – also due to the low -snow winter – one of the most important tourist destinations in Austria, formerly than usual, again at the Easter weekend. For many a special highlight to experience the snow landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Formerly pierced like 50 years ago: Today’s piercing enables traffic to be released on the Großglockner High Alpine Road on the morning, Saturday, April 19. This has been the earliest opening date for half a century. In the 90 -year history – since the opening year 1935 – the Großglockner High Alpine Road was only open five times before April 20. An accumulation of relatively very early openings of Großglocknerstraße in spring there was from 1959 to 1976 where, due to the low rainfall in the winters, it was possible once on April 12 (1964) and once even on April 11 (1974).
“Stitch on the Großglockner” as a technical masterpiece. Despite moderate amounts of snow this winter, the snow removal in the high alpine terrain was a special challenge. Wind drifts, avalanches and unpredictable weather changes required the snow clearing teams from Salzburg and Carinthia more precisely and operational readiness. The symbolic piercing at the high goal – where the teams met at 2,504 meters above sea level (the summit of the high gate itself is at 2,576 m) – marked the successful completion of this demanding work and the beginning of the summer season on the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße.
A high for sustainability. The historic snow blades Rotation plows System Wallack were again operated this year by HVO100-Fuel, an almost climate-neutral organic fuel from hydrated vegetable oils and animal fats. “The CO₂ reduction by up to 90 % is another milestone on the way to a more sustainable mobility in the high mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The entire non-electric groag fleet is now operated with HVO100. So Johannes Hörl, board member of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG.
Security is going on. The through train from Fusch to Heiligenblut can now be passed on, while the final security and clearing work on Gletscherstrasse to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe and the Edelweiß-Spitze are still going on for a few days. Discounted tariffs apply to complete approval.
