“We experienced with great dismay from Reinhard Urbach’s death. He was an outstanding personality of the Austrian cultural and literary scene, who left its commitment, scientific work and his passion for the theater,” said municipal councilor Karl Mahrer, cultural spokesman for the Vienna People’s Party.
Reinhard Urbach, born in Weimar in 1939, was a theater scientist, dramaturge and publicist. From 1979 to 1986 he headed the dramaturgy of the Vienna Burgtheater before he was appointed director of the youth theater in 1988. In this function, he shaped the city’s theater life for many years by opening access to the stage for young people and thus making an important contribution to cultural education. Until his retirement in 2002, he led the youth theater with great passion and foresight.
In addition, Urbach was the initiator and designer of numerous literature and theater projects, such as the literary district in the old smithy or the series “Literature in March”. A special focus of his journalistic work was on Arthur Schnitzler’s work, which he devoted basic studies and editions.
“His work was always carried out by a deep respect for literature and theater. With his tireless work, he inspired generations of artists, gave young people enthusiasm for the theater and the Viennese cultural life enriches. Our thoughts are with the grieving relatives in the difficult hours,” emphasizes Mahrer.
