Greens to ÖVP: Political attacks on independent judiciary must end

ÖVP must accept the independent court’s ruling even in the election campaign year. The ÖVP must also accept the independent court’s ruling in the election campaign year

Vienna (OTS) “I understand that the first instance guilty verdict against ex-Chancellor Kurz is unpleasant for the ÖVP in the election campaign year, but I strongly advise the ÖVP not to fall back into old patterns and mount political attacks against the judiciary, as they have done in the past has already done unsuccessfully,” the Green justice spokeswoman, Agnes Prammer, reacts to the statements made by Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler in today’s ORF press hour.

“Minister Edtstadler demands that the Minister of Justice intervene in legal proceedings. This is in complete contradiction to the Austrian constitution and the principle of separation of powers. As Constitutional Minister and former judge, Karoline Edtstadler knows this,” emphasizes Prammer.

Prammer also refers to the statements of the chairman of the “Criminal Law” section of the Association of Judges and President of the Vienna Regional Court, Friedrich Forsthuber, who quite rightly describes the events as “ligitation PR”, which have the sole purpose of “the person of the judge to attack”. According to Forsthuber, “apples are mixed with oranges” because “the disciplinary proceedings have absolutely nothing to do with the conduct of the current proceedings against former Chancellor Kurz.”
