Environmental protection organization sees ÖVP on the wrong side of history
Vienna (OTS) – Greenpeace strongly criticizes ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer’s reaction to today’s vote on the renaturation law in the EU Council of Ministers. Greenpeace spokeswoman Lisa Panhuber says: “The ÖVP Chancellor’s attacks on environmental protection reach shocking dimensions. Today the ÖVP is once again showing itself to be an anti-nature blocking party. Instead of protecting biodiversity and thus our food supply, the Chancellor wants to fight the protection of nature through absurd lawsuits.”
Leonore Gewessler made the adoption of the historic renaturation law for Europe possible today and made history with her courageous decision. 20 out of 27 countries voted for renaturation. “The fact that the renaturation law was passed today is great news for our nature, countless endangered species and our future. The absurd misinformation provided by the ÖVP and the industrial lobby before the vote was extensively refuted by science and environmental organizations. The people in Austria want this law. The ÖVP is on the wrong side of history”so Panhuber.
Intact nature is essential for our survival and the fight against the climate crisis. Through the renaturation law, moors are to be rewetted, forests are to be reforested and rivers are to be renatured. All of this helps us to cushion weather extremes, environmental pollution and their consequences and maintains our food security in the long term.
