The Vienna Greens welcome the first step announced today for the further renaturation of the Vienna River. “Of the approximately 12 kilometers that are currently missing, work on a tenth of the route is scheduled to begin in 2025. This first step is a partial success of our campaign for a Vienna River oasis,” says Kilian Stark, planning spokesman for the Vienna Green Party, happily. “But there are over 10 kilometers left up to the mouth of the Danube Canal that need to be renatured. The city government is not allowed here “We urgently need to consistently renaturate the Vienna River into the city center,” demands.
This brings local recreation and much-needed cooling to where it is needed most: in the densely built-up areas of the city. Unfortunately, there is no trace of this in the plan presented today. The remaining stretch remains an insurmountable barrier for fish and other aquatic life until it is renatured.
Vienna River Oasis – a once-in-a-century opportunity for climate protection
Last year, the Vienna Greens went on the offensive with their vision of a Vienna river oasis including a cycle path. This envisages renaturation up to Urania, including an accompanying cycle path up to Naschmarkt. A renaturation of the Vienna River was already planned at the turn of the millennium, but fell victim to the red pencil. Now, with the construction of the Wiental Canal, with which canal water can be kept out of the Vienna River in the future, nothing stands in the way of the complete renaturation of the Vienna River. “Plans for the renaturation of the Vienna River up to its mouth are overdue, but unfortunately still pending. Vienna must not miss this once-in-a-century opportunity again due to the SPÖ’s lack of consistency in climate and nature protection,” concluded Stark.
