“Green for the future” – a playful competition for climate and biodiversity

The “Game without borders! Green future” is now starting in 14 communities around Lake Constance.

We would like to shed light on how plants work in our cities. Providing people, plants and animals with enough opportunities to develop in a limited space will be the challenge of the future

Stephan Brenneisen (ZHAW)

Bregenz (OTS) The starting point and inspiration for the “Game without Borders” was the visit to the cooperative customs house at Zurich train station: a biotope, arrival point and meeting point for people, plants and animals. The participating communities were able to exchange ideas in Zurich, get to know new ideas and try out the rules of the game. Now the friendly competition begins to meet the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss with joy and inventiveness.

In the Zollhaus, multifunctional open spaces and roof terraces give many developments and nature plenty of freedom in a small space. A successful example of how planning can meet social and ecological demands. Green spaces and green infrastructure are essential for the well-being of the population. They help to cushion the effects of climate change in settlements and are habitats for urban fauna and flora. The participants of the game visited other selected examples in Zurich such as the well-known climbing plant park in Oerlikon and the bush landscape in the roof garden of the Zurich University of the Arts.

“We want to shed light on how plants work in our cities. Providing people, plants and animals with enough opportunities to develop in a limited space will be the challenge of the future“, said Stephan Brenneisen (ZHAW) during the demonstration of various vertical greening systems in the city garden. This is where the game begins. The motivating start marks the beginning of the game in order to meet the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss together. The Interreg project offers tools for implementation, monitoring and promotes cross-border knowledge exchange.

The game is led by the Urban Ecology Research Group at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences and pulswerk GmbH, the consulting company of the Austrian Ecology Institute. The “Game without borders! Green future” is part of the Interreg project “Future green” and is funded by Interreg VI Alpenrhein-Lake Constance-Hochrhein, Cantonal Funding of Switzerland and the State of Vorarlberg.
