Green economy | Jungwirth: “The current situation is similar to modern slavery.”
Vienna (OTS) –

On the occasion of the study presented today “Making the invisible visible: 24-hour care in Austria” (IG24 in cooperation with FORBA and the University of Vienna), Sabine Jungwirth, federal spokeswoman for the Green Economy, speaks out:

“The situation of 24-hour carers in Austria is shameful and resembles modern slavery. The results of the study once again reveal a picture that is unworthy of our society – especially given the importance of this professional group for all of our lives.”

The Green Economy has always been committed to the professional group of 24-hour carers (personal carers) and to improving their representation of interests within the Chamber of Commerce. The untenable conditions that were discussed in the current study show that a separation of the personal carers from the placement agencies in the interest group WKO is the order of the day. The criticism from those surveyed is primarily directed at the agencies: lack of transparency in contracts, poor earning potential and too little information about clients, as well as inadequate social security and working hours, give rise to criticism.

There are hardly any personal carers with a mandate represented on the WKO committees. The agencies, however, do.

“Within the existing structure in the WKO, there is no opportunity for co-determination with the legislature in order to improve working conditions. It is absolutely necessary to split off personal care into its own specialist organization in order to create a negotiating situation on an equal footing!” demands Sabine Jungwirth, federal spokeswoman for the Green Economy.
