Graz and Lviv enter into partnership

Project partnership deepens knowledge exchange and cooperation with Ukrainian city

Graz (OTS) There are historical relationships between Graz and the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. In the past there have been repeated friendly collaborations between the two cities. On January 12, 2024, the Graz City Senate unanimously decided to enter into a new project partnership with Lviv.

The content of the three-year cooperation is the construction of the Art Library, the new cultural center in the old town of Lviv. The city of Graz is contributing a total of 75,000 euros from mayor Elke Kahr’s departmental funds. To this end, an agreement will be signed between the mayor of Graz and the mayor of Lviv, Andrij Sadowyj.

The focus of the exchange of knowledge is the areas of culture, architecture, urban planning and world cultural heritage.

Mayor Elke Kahr: “Around 3,000 people from Ukraine who had to flee their country due to Russia’s attack have found refuge in Graz, some of them have found a new home. It is good that, in addition to humanitarian support, there is now a deepening of cooperation in the cultural field.”

Vice Mayor Judith Schwentner: “It is very important to me that we, as a human rights city, continue to support the people in Ukraine, who have been suffering from Russia’s terrible war of aggression for the second year now. With this implementation of the urgent request from our local councilor David Ram, we are sending an important signal of solidarity and solidarity – and also a bit of normality in times of war.”

SPÖ club chairwoman Daniela Schlüsselberger: “With this project we are sending an important signal of solidarity with the suffering people in this Ukrainian city. In this way, we, as the human rights city of Graz, can provide a little bit of normality to the population in Lviv, which has been so plagued by Putin’s attack in violation of international law, and which, even far from the front, is still exposed to the fear and horror of the Russian war of aggression and has to fear rocket and bomb terror almost every day and convey future perspectives.”
