With increasing temperatures, many Viennese are drawn to the bathrooms, on natural beaches or in the forests. The numerous parks, drinking fountains and Grätzloasen also offer protection against the heat. There are already 110 of these Grätzloasen in Vienna, which are green parking lines in the parking lane – with seating, tables and plants.
“The Grätzloasen are a welcome replacement for missing terraces or balconies for many people. The residents can recover, chat and get to know new neighbors. But they are also an important contribution to improve the microclimate particularly in densely built -up districts. Every green Grätzloase cools the surroundings noticeably and is part of our heat protection formula: more green space, more shadow and more water,” says Klimstadtrat says Jürgen Czernohorszky.
With the Grätzloase campaign program of the Local Agenda 21 Vienna association, Viennese can make your Grätz Green, livable and neighborly. For example, this is easy with the modular Grätzloase Ronja.
Ronja – inspired by the children’s book figure Ronja Robber daughter – is a modular Grätzloase and offers interested citizens the opportunity to design green lounges on their own front door without having to design or build them themselves. Thanks to flexible modules, raised beds, ranking plants and seating can be individually combined for each Ronja and the upcycling wood used from the seaside city of Aspern ensures sustainability and regional circular economy.
Clear reduction in the ambient temperature by Grätzloasen
Grätzloasen transform park traces into green islands and lower the ambient temperature by up to 29 ° C compared to asphalt surfaces. The significant temperature difference was found in measurements from the University of Natural Resources and the Ground Science.
12 Ronjas have been realized in Vienna since last year-including two in new buildings, Meidling, Penzing and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus as well as one in the districts of Mariahilf, Josefstadt, Simmering and Ottakring.
New: automatic irrigation
Since spring, Ronjas have been equipped with a solar -powered irrigation package: pumps, water storage and automatic timers enable easy care of the greening – even with long -lasting drought.
Ronja shows how modular, easy -care green space improves the quality of life and reduces heat islands in the city. “The modular Grätzloase Ronja makes citizens: Inside with simple means: Inside in public space: The modules come ready and in participatory workshops: Interior together: Interior about equipment and greening. This goes without saying that participation in the Grätzl is a matter of course,” says Sabrina Halkic, managing director of the local agenda 21 Vienna.
Neighbors work together in the implementation of a Ronja: inside-as with Ronja Huglwood in Huglgasse in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, where Anrainer: In the inside of spring, ranks together and tested the new irrigation.
“Of course, we are particularly pleased about our Ronja. In particular, the innovative automatic irrigation, which ensures important basic supply of the plants even during a hot vacation time if this can only be taken over in the event of a limited extent in the event of a neighborhood,” says Peter Schneider from Ronja Huglwood.
10 years of Grätzloase – a milestone for more green and quality of life in the city
The Grätzloase campaign program of the Local Agenda 21 Vienna started ten years ago as a pilot project. Today it is an integral part of the Viennese hands-on culture and an international showcase project for the lived neighborhood, sustainable urban development and creative design of public space. Since the start in 2015, over 1,000 Grätzl projects have been accompanied-from greened parklets to neighborhood gardens to pop-up game streets and street festivals. The modular Grätzloase Ronja has been part of the action program since 2024. More information under www.la21.wien.
