The first performance of Verdis La Traviata delighted the audience in the new open -air talent that was booked up to the last place and heralded the second festival season of the Vienna Opera Summer – this time with twelve performances from July 1st, 2025.
As already in 2024, under the direction of director and conductor Joji Hattori and under the direction of Dominik am Zeihof-Sönsthis time also shone international soloists: inside. Play among them Cristina Pasoiu Als Violetta Valéry, Liparit Avetisyan As Alfredo and Thomas Weinhappel when Giorgio Germont; Flanked by Philharmonia Chor who and that Viennese chamber orchestra.
A German-speaking narrator, the “Spirit Verdis”-embodied by the Oscar-winning actor Karl Markovich – led through the opera pointed and narrative. The lightness of the piece and the plot created in this way optimally complement the elaborate performances and faithful music pieces. The acoustics-the freestyle at open-air music events-also convinces across the board. The live subtitle app OperaGuru offers subtexts in German, English and Italian and guarantees that all visitors can follow: inside the action.
A venue like no other
For the imposing stage design, again draws Manfred Waba responsible. This quickly converted the place of the Wiener Eislaufverein in an open-air opera arena. With 3D buildings along the gang, the integration of the stage into the facade of the Wiener Musikvereinhauses And artistically staged light and video projections was created a venue that can hardly be surpassed in the atmosphere.
Vienna Opera Summer 2026 with Carmen
After Don Giovanni on the Belvedere in the 2024 debut season and this year’s success of La Traviata, director Joji Hattori thinks of 2026. He reveals: “Next year we will play Carmen from Georges Bizet – this will be big opera in Vienna again.” The Vienna Opera Summer will enrich the summer cultural landscape of the capital in the coming years.
