GPA-Teiber: Extending working hours and reducing wages is an affront to employee benefits

Industrial association does not recognize the signs of the times

Vienna (OTS) “The discussion currently initiated by the Industrial Association for an extension of weekly working hours to 41 hours combined with a reduction in wages is an affront to the employees who, through their willingness to perform, have made our country one of the richest in Europe. If you claim that the problem with our economy is that too little work is being done, then that is a conscious provocation or proof that you are not recognizing the signs of the times,” said the chairwoman of the GPA union, Barbara Teiber.

“Economic productivity has increased immensely since the last reduction in working hours, which was 50 years ago. Shorter working hours, even at the legal level, are fair and the need of the hour. We don’t want to be thrown back into the middle of the last century,” said Teiber.

According to the GPA chairwoman, the demand is also completely counterproductive in terms of the economy as a whole. “Especially in times of massive weakness in demand, we need to strengthen incomes.”

“I particularly call on the federal government to clearly distance itself from this backward-looking demand. We need a focus on the actual problems and future issues that will advance our economy and improve people’s quality of life,” said Teiber.
